As the traditional opener of the Vancouver Island Racing Series, this iconic regatta is one of the Pacific Northwest's premier sailing events. Renowned for its scenic courses, challenging conditions, and tactical racing, the Patos Island Race attracts skilled sailors from across British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest for a memorable test of strategy, endurance, and seamanship.
Sailors can choose from three distinct and rewarding courses:
Patos Island Race
At approximately 67 nautical miles, the signature 24-hour event sends boats on a full circumnavigation of Patos Island, with the added tactical challenge of choosing which direction to round. This Category 3 offshore race demands endurance, smart navigation, and seamless teamwork through changing conditions. ORC and PHRF divisions will be offered.
Round Pender
Covering approximately 43 nautical miles, this classic overnight race passes through the scenic waters surrounding Pender and Prevost Islands. Designated as a SER Nearshore race, the course delivers a shorter but demanding challenge, featuring strong tidal influences, strategic route choices, and spectacular coastal scenery.
Gulf Islands Course
At approximately 30 nautical miles, this competitive daytime race follows one of five possible courses selected by the Race Committee on the morning of the event. Designed to be completed in approximately eight hours, it winds through the Southern Gulf Islands using fixed marks and natural island features, rewarding tactical decision-making and boat speed.
